Did you know that Parental Alienation is a form of child abuse?
Parental Alienation Awareness Day on April 25, is put forth to help raise awareness of this growing problem of emotional child abuse, seen predominantly in cases of divorce or separation.
For that day, we will have a number of experts in Parental Alienation, including Dr. Richard Warshak, Dr. Katherine Andre, Dr. Michael Bone, Dr. Reena Sommer, Dr. L.F. Lowenstein, Debra Gordy, Dr. Jerry Brinegar, Dr. Amy J.L. Baker, and Remi Thivierge, that will be available for information and interviews. Families that have been affected by Parental Alienation will tell their stories. There will be community lectures on Parental Alienation, and Mr. Harvey Shapiro, an expert on Parental Alienation and brainwashing techniques will hold 2 workshops, one in Ontario, and the other in South Florida.
Parental Alienation involves the systematic brainwashing and manipulation of children, both overtly and with subtle behaviors, that results in the destruction of a loving relationship they once shared with the parent. As a result, the child shows fear, opposition, and/or overt hatred toward that parent when there is little or no reason. According to Dr. Richard Warshak, a research psychologist and author in Dallas, TX, in his book, Divorce Poison, "You will see a degree of contempt and cruelty reserved for one's worst enemies".
Every year, 1 million marriages end in divorce, resulting in more than 100,000 couples battling over the custody and visitation of children. (Turkat, 2000). Children whose parents divorce, suffer emotionally and psychologically, especially when the divorce is contentious, and the children are exposed to ongoing conflict between their parents. (Amato, 1994) Dr. Reena Sommer, a divorce and custody consultant in Galvaston, TX, states that, "If the alienation process is at all successful, its long term consequences for children may be even more profound." A qualitative research study by Amy J.L.Baker, on 38 adults who experienced Parental Alienation as a child, showed that Parental Alienation impacted such areas as low self esteem, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of trust, alienation from their own children, and divorce. (American Journal of Family Therapy 33:389-302,2005) Most people do not know about Parental Alienation until they experience it. Dr. Katherine Andre, a licensed psychologist in Northern California, and diplomat in the American Psychotherapy Association, reminds us, that, "It takes a village to raise a child." As such, Parental Alienation Day is designed to help make the community aware of Parental Alienation, its causes, its symptoms, and its prevention in the hopes of impacting our most innocent-the children

Mommy, please, it's just not fair
Daddy, don't talk about Mommy when she's not there,
I love you both, don't make me choose,
For if I must, we all will lose,
I know that both my parents care,
And in my life, I want both there,
"Though Mommy and Daddy, you're apart,
I love you both with all my heart.
